Why Insulation and Ventilation are Important

Properly insulating and ventilating our Michigan homes can save a lot of money every month, improve the comfort of our homes and help to protect our health and the wider environment.

Here in Southeastern Michigan, with the long, cold winters and hot and humid summers correctly insulated homes will save money on heating and cooling costs year round.  Correctly ventilated homes also benefit by lowering attic temperatures in the summer, saving money through reduced cooling costs and extending the life of your roof.  Proper ventilation also prevents moisture build up, inhibiting mold growth, preventing the dampening of insulation and seepage into your home's interior.

What's the Best Wall Insulation Material for my Existing Home?

There are several types of materials available for homeowners looking to upgrade the wall insulation in their existing homes.  The most common types on insulation for those of us looking to make our homes more comfortable, sustainable, and energy efficient are cellulose and retro-fit foam insulation.

In my next few posts, I'm going to provide answers and recommendations on the types of wall insulation that will be best for existing homeowners.  First up is an overview of cellulose wall insulation and  why it may not perform as well in existing homes as retro-fit foam wall insulation.

Problem: Cold Crawl Space

In any heating climate (climate that experiences winters like here in Ann Arbor MI.) it can be very cost effective to insulate crawl spaces. A crawl space is an area under your home that varies from about 15” deep upwards to 4ft deep. The crawl is usually sealed (or so we think) with an access door in a basement, outside, or even a floor hatch within the house. It is cold, dusty, moldy, and sometimes even wet. Crawl spaces are nasty buggers! The crawl often spans an addition or sometimes the whole home is on a crawl. In homes such as these homeowners often complain a particular room is very cold and drafty or that the floor itself is very cold. Sometimes they notice the walls in such a room are very cold also. In a situation such as this it would be a good idea to retrofit the crawl space with insulation.
